Life as a fat girl isn’t always an easy experience. There are (mostly) those who say “just eat right and exercise,” many who see us and think we’re lazy, uncaring for our health, and nowadays a handful who stand up and proclaim, “We’re perfect and beautiful just how we are!” But we aren’t here to discuss the politics of weight, we don’t particularly care for any of the above condemnations and affirmations. We are here to talk about the reality of life as a fat girl living and traveling in America and beyond.
Some of it is beautiful, inspiring, and full of self-love, but that doesn’t encompass the whole picture. There is no room for struggle within all of that aggrandizing. The truth is, sometimes it just plain sucks. Sometimes you can’t breathe, sometimes you must think about the where and how of your plans because, frankly, not all establishments are welcoming to the heavyset population. And we are a sizable population. We aren’t here to preach to you about how to get healthy, we aren’t here to tell you to look in the mirror five times a day and tell yourself you are beautiful. We are here to help navigate the world, with tidbits and tips on travel, places to find “age-appropriate” clothing (no matter your age), where the most delicious food is, what booths you can sit it, what airlines are the most accommodating.
Truthfully, if you are looking for inspiration on weight loss, you won’t find it here. If you have been searching for the best place in your city to grab a cup of coffee, to find the most perfect taco, to enjoy a space free from those knowing looks we all are so familiar with, then this is the place for you!
