Taqueria Jefes

Hi Ellen!!! A great day for tacos!!

Hi Ellen!!! A great day for tacos!!

Ideal for: Breakfast on the go, casual lunch with friends

Cost: Taqueria prices, can get in and out under $10 and be way too full!

Offerings: TACOS!!!! Also standard Tex-Mex fare done up food truck style (they have a food truck available for catering)

Experience: Oh my, I love this place. If you know anything about Austin, or South Central Texas, you know there is a a long running argument about the birthplace of the breakfast taco.  I don’t care about that. I just want you to know that the alambre tacos with brisket at Jefes is the most delicious thing I have ever put in my mouth.  It is a melty, gooey, cheesy delight.  Like a true (almost) gringa, I get mine on flour tortillas, they come three to an order for about 6 dollars and they are like heaven on a plate. I often start with the chips and queso, it’s not much to write home about, pretty basic melted cheese and peppers, but delicious nonetheless ( I am a Texan after all!)  The greatest thing about the place, besides the alambre tacos of course, is that they make their chips in house from their flour tortillas.  They are thick and salty and dense and I love them. They have a salsa bar located in the back corner and the light green stuff  (I don’t even know what it’s called) will blow your mind!  You can also get a traditional Nopales breakfast taco and it is amazing! Nopales is the fleshy part of the prickly pear cactus, and worth trying at least once in your life.  And the Horchata!!! My god, it’s creamy and perfect and just the thing to chill your bones in the sweltering Texas summers. It’s important to note that Jefes is only open until 3pm most days, so you definitely want to hit them up in the late morning/early afternoon. This place is run by a family and every time we walk in the door the experience is wonderful from beginning to end.

Man, I need to go there now!!!

Man, I need to go there now!!!

Seating: I love this place, the chairs are armless and soft, and the booths allow movement of the table, so if you need to make room you can.

Pros: Amazing tacos, awesome staff, Horchata!!!!

Cons: None that I can think of
